Rahul Gandhi Skips Rallies in Delhi Assembly Elections

By Amit Kumar

New Delhi, January 23: The Congress poll mascot Rahul Gandhi once again skipped scheduled elections rallies in Delhi. The Congress national general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is also away from electioneering in Delhi. The electioneering for the Delhi Assembly elections already has entered the last leg.

The clear disconnect between the electioneering of the Delhi unit of the Congress with the top campaigners of the party in the national capital is giving rise to speculations. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is growing wary of the national leaders of the Congress not campaigning hard in Delhi.

“We are disturbed at the cancellation of the Shadar Bazar campaign of Rahul yesterday. Again, rallies of Rahul were cancelled. This is distressing,” said a senior BJP functionary.

Rahul’s rallies in Chandni Chowk and Mustafabad were cancelled. The party leaders explained that Rahul is not keeping well. But, the Congress leaders didn’t give new dates for the electioneering by Rahul.

“It is not decided when Rahul will hold the next rally,” said a senior Congress leader from the Delhi unit. The Congress is, however, giving a semblance of being serious about the Delhi Assembly elections.

The Congress on Thursday released ‘Dilli Mein Ka Ba’ song campaign to appeal to the Purvanchali voters. The Congress is slamming the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the misgovernance in the national capital.

The Congress national president Mallikarjuna Kharge is also yet to hit the poll turf in Delhi. Electioneering for the Congress is currently banking on the local leaders.

But the BJP has stepped up electioneering in Delhi. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed three rallies on Thursday. The BJP chief JP Nadda also hit the campaign turf.

The AAP leaders have also intensified election campaign. It’s to be noted that the AAP and the Congress stayed away from alliance despite being constituents of the Opposition bloc, the Indian National Developmental and Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

The Congress has put up candidates on all the 70 Assembly seats. The party has fielded old guns, as well as fresh faces.

But the AAP is accusing the Congress of helping the BJP. Political observers opine that gains in vote base of the Congress will only be at the cost of the AAP. The BJP seeks a strong triangular contest to stage a comeback in the city politics, they argued.

Rahul earlier had given a strong start to the Congress campaign in Delhi. But he afterwards has gone missing from the poll turf.
