BJP to assess Haryana challenge after LS Poll

 By Manish Anand

New Delhi, May 8: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Haryana is bracing to stay put in power even after losing the majority in the state Assembly. The BJP may work out a safety net after the Lok Sabha elections.

Three Independent MLAs withdrew their support to the BJP government in another twist in the state politics. They have joined the Congress. The state Assembly already is two-short of its full strength.

Haryana Assembly Speaker Gyan Chand Gupta on Wednesday rejected the Opposition demand for the floor test. Gupta told reporters that he has not received any letter from anyone.

“The situation remains as same as had been in the past. The BJP still has 40 MLAs. The Congress also remains with a strength of 30 MLAs. The JJP still has 10 MLAs. There are six independent MLAs,” Gupta told the news agency, PTI.

The claims made by Gupta appear to suggest that the status quo will remain in the Haryana politics. Technically, the BJP has a safety net for another four months.

The Opposition cannot move a no confidence motion for another four months in the Haryana Assembly. Haryana Chief Minister Naib Saini had taken trust vote two months ago. Thus, the six months long freeze on no confidence motion will be relied upon by the BJP.

Saini also exuded confidence that his government will continue working for the people. “The Opposition had been mired in corruption. We are working for the wellbeing of the people,” Saini told reporters.

Besides, the crisis manager of the BJP will watch out for the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections. The party strategists are arguing that the BJP will take a decision in the matter of the Haryana politics after assessing the outcome of the Assembly elections in the state.

“A realignment in the Haryana politics may not be ruled out. The outcome of the Lok Sabha elections will help the BJP take a better decision,” said a senior BJP functionary.

The BJP has a strength of 40 MLAs in the Haryana Assembly. The halfway mark currently in the state Assembly is 45, as there are two vacancies.

The JJP after the exit from power in the state is also contesting the Lok Sabha elections on its own. The BJP is keeping a watch on the JJP campaign. The BJP may assess the strength of the JJP after the Lok Sabha elections, added the BJP functionary.
