New Delhi, July 15: At a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre claims to have generated eight crore jobs, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA has advised college students to open puncture shops for livelihoods.
The BJP MLA, Pannalal Shakya, in his speech at the inauguration of a college in Guna in Madhya Pradesh claimed that the degrees are useless. “The college degrees will be useless. Open puncture shops so that they can support your livelihoods,” said Shakya, while speaking at the inauguration of the college in Guna on Sunday.
Shakya’s short speech clip has gone viral on the social media platforms. His remarks have gained national attention.
“Nothing will happen after taking the college degrees. You should open puncture shops of motorcycles so that your livelihoods will be supported,” added Shakya.

The BJP MLA sought to give background to his bizarre statements by giving examples of tree plantations. “If thousands of saplings are planted, they too cannot grow unless they are watered,” added Shakya.
Possibly, the BJP MLA suggested that the college students along with the degrees should engage in gainful activities to support their livelihoods.
The Opposition took potshots at the Modi government over the remarks of the BJP MLA. “We must credit the BJP for the top-class discipline in their economic messaging. The self-anointed divinity talks about the virtues of selling pakodas as an antidote to unemployment, and their MLAs dismiss college degrees as ‘useless’ and urge students to open puncture shops,” said Jairam Ramesh, the communication department chief of the Congress.

Modi had in past claimed that the youths selling ‘pakoda’ were also employed in gainful activities. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently came out with a report to claim that employment strongly grew in the country in the recent months.
The RBI in its report said that the employment growth in the country was six per cent in 2023-24. The employment growth rate was 3.2 per cent in 2022-23.
The RBI report had claimed that 4.7 crore jobs were created in the 2023-24 fiscal. Modi had also asserted on the basis of the RBI report that a fake narrative was being spread by the Opposition.
Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the Congress president, Mallikarjuna Kharge, had accused Modi of weaving a web of lies. Kharge in a post on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, said: “Modi had promised that National Recruitment Agency will create jobs. But the NRA held no recruitment examinations in the last four years.”
