New Delhi, March 9: Telugu Desam Party and the Jansena Party on Saturday formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections. The decision to join the NDA came in the form of a joint statement which stated that the three parties will finalize seat adjustments in Andhra Pradesh soon.
The joint statement issued by the BJP chief JP Nadda, TDP president N Chandra Babu Naidu, and the Jansena Party leader Pawan Kalyan said that the seat adjustments would be finalized within a day or two. Naidu stated in the statement that the TDP had been an old ally of the BJP, and the party was with the NDA government formed in 2014 at the Centre with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm.
While the TDP and Pawan Kalyan have boarded the NDA, the political observers are speculating that the BJP is pressing Naidu against the wall to demand a large number of the Lok Sabha seats. The BJP is learnt to be seeking to contest about 5-6 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh. The TDP on the other hand doesn’t believe that the BJP has footprints in Andhra Pradesh to contest even two Lok Sabha seats, said a party functionary.
However, Kalyan has pushed Naidu to return to the NDA as the film star turned politician is keen to contest the Lok Sabha elections. He was a BJP ally in 2018 also. The election strategist Prashant Kishor is being said to have persuaded Naidu to join hands with the BJP to gain the saffron support in the Assembly election.
The ruling YSR Congress had enhanced the vote percentage by four per cent bag almost 50 per cent vote base in Andhra Pradesh in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In contrast, TDP had polled 40.19 per cent. All other parties, including the Congress, had together polled about nine per cent with the BJP share having been negligible. The BJP had polled 0.98 per cent votes in Andhra Pradesh in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Jan Sena Party had polled 5.87 per cent votes in the 2029 general elections.
The BJP for the past five years had sought to ride both the boats in Andhra Pradesh – YSR Congress and the TDP. The YSR Congress has always supported the Modi government in parliament. In contrast, Naidu had left the NDA in 2018, alleging that the Modi government didn’t fulfil the promise of the special category status for Andhra Pradesh.
