New Delhi, March 6: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on weekend will decide the leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly. Three months after losing the Jharkhand Assembly elections, the BJP finally will be holding the legislature party meeting this weekend.
The BJP top brass has been briefed that the leadership vacuum is harming the interests of the party, said highly placed source. “The BJP top brass was told that the state unit is now behaving almost like a headless chicken. The BJP alliance partners are also not taking the state party leaders seriously,” said the highly placed source.
The BJP parliamentary board finally assigned Union Minister Bhupender Yadav to go as an observer to Ranchi for the legislature party meeting. “The Budget session of the Jharkhand Assembly is mid-way. The BJP top brass ignored the Jharkhand unit to not even bother to approve election of the legislature party leader. Now, the situation is such that no one consults Babu Lal Marandi,” said another senior BJP functionary.
Marandi is currently the BJP president in the Jharkhand unit. The state BJP leaders are further in a state of leadership void after the return of former Odisha Governor Raghubar Das.
After the merger of JVM into BJP, Babulal Marandi was elected party leader. But Jharkhand Speaker never gave him the status of leader of Opposition. The BJP challenged the decision of speaker in courts. But the final judgment never came. Just a year before the election, BJP SC MLA Amar Bauri was made leader of Opposition and Babulal was appointed as Jharkhand BJP president.
“The BJP has to address the issue of the leadership void quickly. Champai Soren has won the Assembly elections. But he is least likely to become the leader of the Opposition. Marandi may again become the leader of the Opposition,” said the highly place source.
But Marandi will have to vacate the post of the Jharkhand BJP president. “The BJP will have to return to a tribal face in the Assembly. A non-tribal face will most likely be made the state unit president of the BJP,” added the source.
The BJP faced the worst electoral defeat in the Assembly elections a few months ago in Jharkhand. Reports said that the NDA allies such as AJSU and the JD (U) are not consulting the BJP leaders in the ongoing Budget session of the Assembly.
“The leadership void in the BJP in Ranchi has allowed the JLKM chief Jairam Kumar Mahto to hog the media limelight as if he is the leader of the Opposition in the state,” said a senior BJP functionary.
