New Delhi, November 6: The Bharatiya Janata Party gave tickets to six women candidates for the 68-member Himachal Pradesh in the Assembly elections slated for November 12. Congress too was miser in giving tickets to women candidates. But both the parties have offered bouquets of promises to women in an acknowledgement that their turnout being the maximum will decide the fate of the candidates in the polls.

The BJP chief JP Nadda on Sunday unveiled the ‘Sankalpa Patra’ of the party, and promised 33 per cent reservation to women in Himachal Pradesh in the government jobs. This is in response to Congress promising guarantee to give Rs 1500 to each woman in Himachal Pradesh after the party forms the government in the state. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had promised Rs 1000 to each woman in Punjab, and swept the Assembly elections in the state.

Nadda also unveiled a slew of promises for the women to present a package to counter Congress’ promise of Rs 1500, while making determined bid to stay away from the politics of freebies, which has been attacked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi harshly in the recent months. So, the BJP has promised that the party-led government would support the women-led homestay in the states, besides monetary support to new mothers, scholarships to girls and also scooties to them as ways to empower them. Reservation for women as promised by the BJP will need to be implemented across the reserved categories. To Congress’ promise of creating five lakh jobs in the state, the BJP has given the assurance to create eight lakh employments in the hilly state. The BJP promise for three free LPG cylinders are also aimed to win the support of the women voters in Himachal Pradesh.

Women, incidentally, are outnumbering the men in voters’ turnouts. For instance, Hamirpur and Kangra districts had recorded 71 per cent and 67 per cent women voters’ turnout, which were way ahead of them men voters. The women voters’ turnout has consistently been rising in Himachal Pradesh, as their turnout was 77.92 per cent in the 2017 Assembly elections against 71.6 per cent by the men. This trend remains unbroken since 1998, which the political observers explain to the migration of the men to the other states in search for employments.

  1. Good political coverage with relevant data.
Promises before election has been the tactics of all political parties and but now this is pulling all the parties to the next level …no surprise.
    – In fact, no option left for others once a political party starts attracting voters with freebies / offers.
    – Let’s see how far this free fall of morales of voters & politician goes.
    – Finally, we are the ones who will suffer in the end but we are being ignorant of this knowingly.
Best of luck to the citizens !!!
