The BJP banks on Hindu vote consolidation and a split in the Muslim electorate to script a saffron surge in Bihar’s Seemanchal region.

Purnea (Bihar), October 18, 2025 — The newly inaugurated airport in Purnea buzzes with the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) making a quick dash to their destinations after their planes land here. With roaring highways in the backyard, the rural backyard of Bihar is now making a bid to gain a space in state’s political pot.

Purnea is the launchpad for Bihar’s Seemanchal region. Demography makes a quick change as one travels further deeper into the region.

Demography of Seemanchal region, at least on paper, should give a cakewalk to the Mahagathbandhan (the opposition alliance-led by the RJD). The MY (Muslim-Yadav) combination, which had been considered as the key catchment vote base of the RJD, is in a numerical domination in the region.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) knows well that the party also has a good chance to win a significant number of seats from the regions on the basis of its politics of Hindutva. The politics of polarisation is back in focus as the region braces for the Assembly elections next years.

Purnia, Katihar, Kishanganj, Araria, and Thakurganj are collectively known as Seemanchal region of Bihar. The region is known for significant Muslim voter population, which heavily influences the outcomes of several assembly constituencies.

The BJP has undertaken extensive preparations to address this challenge. Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand and BJP Jharkhand general secretary Pradeep Verma has been appointed as the political in-charge of this region. Several MPs, ministers from various states, MLAs, and former ministers have also been deployed to manage the election campaign in this area.

The decision to hold Yogi Adityanath’s first rally in Saharsa is a key part of this strategy, aimed at consolidating Hindu voters and securing their support for the NDA. Under Varma’s leadership, the BJP is working in a planned manner, including efforts to pacify party rebels.

“Only the NDA’s double-engine government can fight anti-national and anarchic elements,” Yogi said, urging voters to thwart the opposition’s “conspiracy” and protect Bihar’s identity. Resonating with chants of “Jai Shri Ram,” this rally at Saharsa marked the beginning of BJP’s strategy to leverage cultural nationalism and governance achievements, expected to intensify in Bihar’s crucial elections.

While independent and pro-Congress MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav hold forte in Purnia, the BJP is hoping that an aggressive consolidation of the Hindu vote base and division in the Muslim electorate can open up the Seemanchal region for saffron somersault in the elections.
