Parliament Battlefield Leaves BJP & Congress Filing Police Complaints

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, December 19: High drama on Thursday in parliament premises sent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress to the police station to lodge police complaints. By evening, two sets of police complaints had been filed.

Former Union Minister Anurag Thakur and the BJP MP Hemang Joshi rushed to the parliament street police station. They filed complaint against leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The BJP MPs charged Gandhi for “attempt to murder, inciting violence, and assault”.

The Congress leaders also filed a police complaint against BJP MPs (unnamed) for attacking party’s president Mallikarjuna Kharge. The Congress leaders attached a video of the alleged assault against Kharge, saying that the BJP MPs are identifiable.

Kharge hails from the scheduled caste. The accused BJP MPs may find non-bailable charges pressed against them following the police complaint, said the Congress leaders.

The Congress and the BJP leaders also kept the media with day-long media briefings. Kharge and Gandhi addressed the media to assert that the “BJP staged the drama to divert attention from the insult to BR Ambedkar by Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah”.

Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that he had never seen such a scene in his entire political career. The Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is said to have given directions for not holding protests at doors of parliament per sources being quoted by a media reports.

Union Minister and the BJP chief Jagat Pratap Nadda raised the issue of alleged attacks on two party MPs with the Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar. The Rajya Sabha chairman said that he would examine the issue.

Amid the din in the Rajya Sabha, deputy chairman Harivansh announced that the impeachment motion against Dhankar has been rejected by the Chair. The Congress had claimed that a record 60 Opposition MPs had signed the impeachment motion against Dhankar.

The high drama on Thursday took place after the Opposition launched a massive attack on Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah for his alleged insult to Ambedkar. Shah had made references to Ambedkar during his reply to the discussion on Constitution yesterday.

The Congress had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack Shah from the council of ministers. This was also the first occasion that the Congress had given an ultimatum of midnight to sack a minister to the prime minister.

The Congress social media handle released Gandhi’s picture with the backdrop of the slogan of ‘Jai Bhim’. This slogan has been the mainstay of the Dalit politics. With the alleged insult against Ambedkar plank, the Congress apparently sought to take a pivotal position on Dalit politics and turn the table against the BJP.

But political slugfest ended in police complaints on the penultimate day of the Winter session of parliament.
