New Delhi, September 16: In the first show of unity after the reconstitution of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Mallikarjuna Kharge, the party chief, sought to rally the workers in Telangana ahead of the Assembly election, while also bracing the outfit for the upcoming special session of parliament.
“We strongly condemn the government’s attempts to stifle Opposition in parliament and curtail public scrutiny. The forthcoming special session of parliament raises concerns about the ruling party’s intentions,” said Kharge in his speech to the CWC meeting.
In a significant statement that suggests the Congress’ bid to take the leadership role of the Opposition bloc, Kharge also said: “Indian National Congress has been playing a pivotal role as the principal opposition party at the Centre for the past nine-and-half years with committed determination in redressing concerns and grievance of the common people.”
While on an official trip to Bihar, Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah sought to challenge the narrative of the Opposition bloc, as he claimed in a public meeting in Jhanjharpur that the UPA has taken a new name to erase the corruption record. Shah asserted that while the NDA had won 39 of 40 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 general elections, all the parliamentary constituencies would come in the NDA kitty in the next year’s general elections.
“The country is at crossroads today facing many internal challenges. Modi government has been a complete failure on all important fronts — inflation, unemployment, raging violence in Manipur, widening inequality and declining condition of farmers and labourers,” added Kharge.
Shah on the other hand sought to pin down the INDIA bloc, accusing that he reads only news the reports of crimes in Bihar. Shah’s charges on the law and order front are likely to be the BJP’s principal campaign theme in Bihar, as the saffron outfit braces to contest the next year’s Lok Sabha elections without a big alliance partner.
“On the national security front, the Government’s alleged negligence regarding China’s encroachments poses a critical danger to the country’s security. However, ignoring all these fundamental issues, Modi Government has this tendency to repeatedly deflect and divert attention from real issues with empty slogans,” charged Kharge.
The Congress and other Opposition parties have decided not to boycott the special session of parliament, while the government has listed a discussion on the issue of 75 years of the Indian democracy in the agenda.
