Amit Shah in spot amid BJP poll reversals in UP & Rajasthan

By Manish Anand

New Delhi, June 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may soon be staring at the prospects of upheavals from within the organisation. Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah may find himself in dock over the heavy losses of the BJP in key saffron turf.

“There will be review of the poll performance of the BJP in a time frame not far away, and reasons will be found out. The heavy loss in Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere is a deep cause of concern for the BJP,” said a senior ranking BJP functionary.

A day after the poll reversal in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP leaders sought to shift blame from Amit Shah to the state Chief minister Yogi Adityanath. But the central leadership of the BJP appears cautious that the backlash could trigger a much ugly slugfest in the near future.

The UP CM was underutilized by the BJP. This was seen in his almost negligible media interview presence. In contrast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah had almost held the mainstream media as captive audience to peddle their narratives.

“One of the key reasons for the defeat of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh was the candidate selection for which the onus lies with Shah and Modi,” said a senior ranking BJP leader from Lucknow.

The role of the Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) is also now in the spotlight. The RSS is learnt to be watching the post-poll affairs in the BJP keenly.

“The day of the hegemony of Modi and Shah in running the affairs of the BJP may soon get over. The RSS will step in to put the house in the order. The role of the BJP National General secretary (Organisation) B L Santhosh will also be reviewed,” said an RSS observer.

Within the BJP, it’s seen that the wings of Santhosh were clipped after the party lost the Karnataka Assembly elections woefully. The BJP national general secretary (organisation) is widely known as the RSS position in the party.

There is strong discontent within the BJP over the manner in which the party top brass insulted former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje. The BJP lost 11 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan.

“The defeat in Rajasthan was self-inflicted. The BJP leadership needs to explain the choice of the chief minister in Rajasthan,” said a senior BJP functionary from Jaipur.

Incidentally, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan emerged with an image of a selfless politician as he helped the BJP win all the 29 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Chauhan was removed as the chief minister even while he had led the BJP to a massive poll win in Madhya Pradesh.
