BJP announces populist manifesto for J&K Assembly polls

By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi, September 6: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday announced manifesto for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. The BJP has packed a slew of populist promises to appeal to the electorate in J&K.

The BJP has promised ₹1500 per month, 18,000 annually, for the seniormost woman in a family. This promise is on the lines of the Aam Aadmi Party’s ₹1000 for each woman in Punjab and also of the Congress in Karnataka.

“Implementing ‘Maa Samman Yojana’ to provide ₹18,000 per year to the senior most woman in every household in Jammu & Kashmir…,” said the ‘Sankalpa Patra’ of the BJP that was released on Friday.

The BJP has also promised additional ₹4000 to farmers under the central scheme of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi. “We will provide ₹10,000 under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, comprising the existing ₹6,000 along with an additional ₹4,000, thereby ensuring the wellbeing of farmers in Jammu & Kashmir,” added the BJP manifesto for J&K.

The BJP also promised a “scheme for relief from outstanding bills of electricity and water for all consumers” in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP also announced a support of ₹10,000 for solar power set up at households.

The BJP also promised to “provide two free LPG cylinders every year to the Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana beneficiaries”. The BJP has also promised to provide for “₹3,000 yearly through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) as travel allowance to college students under the Pragati Shiksha Yojana”.

The BJP also announced financial support for civil services aspirants. The BJP promised to “provide a reimbursement of coaching fees to the tune of ₹10,000 for two years”. The BJP also promised to reimburse the travel costs to examination centres and one-time application fee for state and UPSC aspirants.

The BJP has also promised to “triple the old age, widow and disability pensions from ₹1,000 to ₹3,000”. The BJP has also promised “reduced electricity tariffs, lowered by up to 50 per cent, for agricultural activities, making it more affordable for farmers to operate irrigation pumps and other machinery”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sought to build a narrative against the politics of freebies. But the BJP changed the tack after the loss in the Karnataka Assembly elections.
