ZOHO Co-founder to Stay in Tech Role with AI Focus

By Raisina Correspondent

New Delhi, January 30: Billionaire Sridhar Vembu has trashed speculations of his joining politics. He has said that he is too busy working on artificial intelligence (AI).

“I heard there is a news item going around about me joining politics. I burst out laughing when I heard this,” Vembu wrote on X on Thursday.

The billionaire made a sensation recently after quitting the post of the chief executive officer to take up the role of the head of the research and development (R&D) in ZOHO. He had also made a splash by settling in a village, 40 kms off Chennai, after his return from the US.

“I have been preparing hard to present our R&D strategy on AI to an audience of industry analysts in Austin next week. Yes, I will be going there,” added Vembu.

‘Thalapathy’ Vijay Vows New Age Politics in Tamil Nadu

The Padma Shri awardee is hailed as a pioneer in the tech world in India. In an interview to a newspaper in 2021, Vembu had said that he would not be looking at the prospects of joining politics for at least 10 years.

“I have an extremely challenging new role in deep tech R&D right now and there is just no way, NO WAY, I have any time for politics,” added Vembu.

The Tamil Nadu politics is currently buzzing with an electrifying expansion of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Popular Tamil actor C. Joseph Vijay had launched TVK last year.

Within a year, Vijay has expanded the footprints of his party all across Tamil Nadu. His outfit per media reports has now more party districts than the ruling DMK and the Opposition AIADMK.

Three Faces Rise to Change Politics of Status Quo

“I have had ZERO discussions with anyone, about me joining politics. I hope that clears that up. Back to work,” added Vembu, while trashing speculations about his joining politics.

However, a few of tech CEOs in India have tasted politics in the past. Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani had contested the Lok Sabha elections unsuccessfully from Bengaluru.

A number of industrialists from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have been part of the electoral politics. It was not immediately not known if any political party in Tamil Nadu had approached Vembu with any offer.
