Nitish Kumar Supporters Force Out Tushar Gandhi for anti-Modi Comment

By AMIT KUMAR

MOTIHARI, July 14, 2025 – Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, was heckled and expelled from a public meeting at the Turkaulia Panchayat Bhawan in Motihari. A local Panchayat leader accused Tushar Gandhi of being unworthy heir of the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.

Reports said that the incident occurred after Tushar Gandhi allegedly criticized Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, prompting an angry reaction from local supporters of Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) party.

Tushar Gandhi invited a challenge from local mukhiya, Vinay Kumar Shah, who reportedly took offense to Gandhi’s remarks, which were perceived as critical of the state and central governments.

Viral videos showed that Tushar Gandhi was sharing his views when a person accompanying him made a comment. This invited a sharp response from the local mukhiya, who promptly asked him to leave the venue. Tushar Gandhi sought to buy peace with the local Mukhiya. He asked Shah to behave, pointing finger at the Panchayat leader.

Attempts by locals to pacify the situation failed. Tushar Gandhi was forced to exit the Panchayat Bhawan. The incident stirred poll pot in Bihar, which is heading for the Assembly elections later this year. A section of activists alleged that supporters of the Chief Minister insulted Mahatma Gandhi’s descendant in his ancestral karmabhoomi, Champaran.

Motihari holds significant space in India’s freedom struggle history, as Mahatma Gandhi had launched the Champaran Satyagraha in 1917 from here.

Motihari, a significant political hub in East Champaran, has been a focal point for both the NDA and opposition campaigns. The incident has reignited discussions about political civility and the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi in his historic karmabhoomi.

Incidentally, the Congress is making spirited efforts in the region to reclaim the political turf from the BJP and the JD (U). Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has held a number of strategy outreach to weaker sections of the society to make bridges with electorally influential caste groups.

Local political observers claimed that Tushar Gandhi had come to Motihari to build grounds for the Mahagathbandhan, consisting of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (United), the Congress, the CPI (ML), and others. Sharp political lines are being drawn in Bihar as the polls get nearer, with the Opposition launching scathing attacks on Modi and Kumar.

Observers also stated that the ruling dispensation is getting jittery over sharpening attacks by the Opposition leaders. The ruling dispensation is also facing heat over rising crime rates, including murder cases of businessmen.
