Big Brother

Stating that undermining an elected government through the passage of the Delhi Services Bill by Parliament, The Indian Express in its Editorial opined that the move strikes at the compact of the federal system, while slamming the Biju Janata Dal and YSR Congress for blind-walking with the Centre. The Noida-based daily stressed that the decision to support the Centre to bend an elected government may haunt regional parties, as precedent may spur urge for repeat actions against adversarial state governments.

The idea that a panel consisting of Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, and Principal Home Secretary will now decide the transfer and postings of the officials and Lieutenant Governor will have final say should be counted as a final nail in the coffin of the elected governance system in the national capital.

Third Term

The Asian Age in its Editorial has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been abled to repeat his performance of selling dreams and ideas to the people but more hard-selling will only ensure that he’s third-time lucky. The New Delhi-based daily underlined that the Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party is sharpening the caring government template for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Modi way of welfarism won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. But the Congress and others have also hit the bull’s eye with cash-in-hand welfarism. The economic inequity creates space for the Congress model of welfarism, which is enjoying upper hands in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, and Himachal Pradesh.

Uniform Stress

Quoting from the government reply in the Rajya Sabha, The Tribune in its Editorial has said that the number of psychiatric cases in the paramilitary forces swelled by an alarming 38 per cent from 3,584 in 2020 to 4,940 last year. “Jawans working under duress are prone to getting violent when their problems are not resolved,” added the Chandigarh-based daily, quoting a report of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Internal security was the principal mandate of the paramilitary forces, but now they are deployed everywhere. This calls for more boots on the ground, and the financial strain aspect of the government will need sustainable solutions.
