Mumbai, May 10, 2026 — Indian model Bhavitha Mandava turned heads at the Met Gala 2026 with a surprisingly understated custom Chanel look that has since sparked intense debate and admiration across social media.

Mandava attended fashion’s biggest night alongside fellow Chanel muse Awar Odhiang, wearing a mousseline silk reinterpretation of her opening look from Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2026 collection. At first glance, the ensemble resembled a casual quarter-zip top paired with jeans — a stark contrast to the extravagant couture typically associated with the Met Gala red carpet.

But behind the minimalist styling was a deeply personal story.

According to Vogue, the outfit referenced the clothes Mandava was wearing when she was first discovered by a modeling scout at a subway station in New York City. The look later inspired her historic appearance at the Chanel Métiers d’Art 2026 show, where she became the first Indian model to open a Chanel runway.

Within months of being scouted, Mandava rapidly rose through global fashion ranks, walking for luxury labels including Bottega Veneta, Dior and Courrèges. In a report by BBC, journalist Zoya Mateen noted that Mandava was quickly “swept into the world of luxury fashion” before becoming closely associated with Chanel.

Social media reactions praised the Indian-born model’s confidence and refusal to conform to traditional Met Gala expectations. Fashion commentator Immy Kant wrote on X that Mandava possessed “a facecard so incredible” that she transitioned “from tech” into becoming “a household name in the US.”

Another viral post described her appearance as a “cosmic UNO reverse,” arguing that Mandava transformed what critics called an overly casual outfit into a statement about self-worth and authenticity.

Before fashion, Mandava pursued architecture at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and later studied assistive technology at New York University — a journey that fans say makes her rise all the more remarkable.
