New Delhi, April 8: In a possible first sign of change in Bangladesh, the police launched a crackdown against Jihadists. Chief Advisor of Interim Government of Bangladesh Muhammad Yunus announced a crackdown on pro-Gaza protestors.
“Bangladesh police have swiftly moved to take action over the violent and unlawful events that unfolded during the Pro-Gaza protests in several cities on Monday,” said Yunus is a statement.
Pro-Gaza protests in Bangladesh vandalized shops and establishments. BATA issued a statement to clarify that the “business group has no links with Israel”. Protestors celebrated Al-Qaeda’s deceased head Osama Bin Laden in Dhaka yesterday.
“These attacks and acts of vandalism are an affront to public safety and the rule of law. As of now, at least 49 individuals have been arrested in connection with these incidents,” added Yunus in his statement.
He also stated that the “police have acted swiftly, and two cases have been formally filed. Further investigations are underway, and additional cases are in the process of being filed against those responsible for these reprehensible acts.” “In a determined effort to bring those accountable to justice, police conducted raids last night targeting the perpetrators. Additionally, our law enforcement agencies are diligently reviewing video footage captured during the protests to identify more individuals involved,” said Yunus.
The Chief Advisor also stated that “these operations will continue until all those responsible for this violence and destruction are apprehended”.
“…we can ensure that those who seek to undermine the peace and stability of our society are held accountable,” added Yunus.
A nation-wide pro-Gaza protests saw rioting and loot of private businesses and even attacks on minorities. The statement of Yunus is possibly a first definitive condemnation of Jihadists in Bangladesh.
After the August 8 ouster of Sheikh Hasina-led regime, Jihadists in Bangladesh have vandalised properties of leaders linked to Awami League, dismantling statues of Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rehman, and several attacks on minority Hindus.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his meeting with Yunus in Bangkok on the sidelines of BIMSTEC Summit had called upon Yunus for the protection of the minority Hindus in Bangladesh.
Facing 37 per cent tariffs from the US, Bangladesh also faces deepening economic crisis with textile exports now in jeopardy. Besides, Bangladesh is also wary of Jihadists holding nation to ransom may put off China, which is already facing excessive cash burn in Pakistan.
