New Delhi, July 24: Bangladesh has raised objections to comments of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with the Indian embassy in Dhaka. Banerjee in a tweet had stated that hundreds of students had to leave “trouble-torn” Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh government has raised strong objections to the comments of Mamta Banerjee on situation in Bangladesh with the High Commission of India. It was also stated that the Bangladesh government has said that “the tweet of Mamta Banerjee was provocative and had false elements concerning the internal affairs of Bangladesh”.

Bangladesh is learnt to have informed the Indian embassy in Dhaka that “they are trying to bring normalcy, and such remarks (particularly on the deaths of students) by the Chief Minister of West Bengal is misleading”.

However, the purported tweet of Banerjee on deaths in Bangladesh was not available on her timeline. “Hundreds of students and others are returning to West Bengal/ India, from the trouble-torn Bangladesh,” Banerjee tweeted on July 21.

The West Bengal chief minister further stated in the tweet that she had “asked our State administration to render all help and assistance to the returnees”. “For instance, around 300 students arrived at Hilli border today and most of them left for their respective destinations safely,” the chief minister informed.

She also stated that “35 of them (students), however, needed help and we provided them with basic amenities and facilitation assistance”.

Bangladesh erupted with an unprecedented violence last week in the wake of the protests against 30 per cent reservation in government jobs for the descendants of families who had fought for the liberation of the Islamic nation in 1971.

“They informed that as mentioned in the post of Mamta Banerjee on X, the situation mentioned with reference to the United Nations Resolution, does not prevail in Bangladesh. Further, Bangladesh said this kind of comment, in particular the assurance of giving refuge to the people, may provoke many people, especially the terrorists and miscreants to take advantage of such an announcement,” added a government source, which referred to the protests of Bangladesh with the Indian embassy.

Bangladesh on Thursday restored the broadband internet services after days of violence. Reports said that about 116 people lost their lives in the Bangladesh violence, while several more were injured.
