New Delhi, August 24: The Assam Police on Saturday said that the main accused in the teen gangrape incident has drowned to death. The Nagaon Superintendent of Police (SP) Swapnaneel Deka told reporters that prime accused in Assam rape case had escaped the police custody.
“The prime accused drowned to death into a pond in Dhing,” said Deka. The police had arrested Tafazul Islam after the alleged gangrape of a teenaged girl in Assam’s Nagaon district.
The alleged gangrape of 14-year-old girl set off massive protests in Assam. triggering massive protests by people on the streets. The girl was allegedly assaulted and raped by three persons.

The victim was reportedly returning home after taking tuition on her bicycle in Dhing area on Thursday evening. She had to cross another village to reach her tuition centre.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the indigenous people in Assam are in a state of fear. He was speaking in the aftermath of the alleged gangrape of the teenaged girl.
The local media reports quoted Sarma, saying in Baraka that “all the indigenous people in the districts where they are in minority are living in a state of fear”.

A portal, Hindu Voice, claimed that there have been 25 cases of assaults against the Hindus after the Lok Sabha elections. “After the Lok Sabha election in 2024, Assam has witnessed terror from Islamic radicals. In the last four months, in different parts of Assam, incidents of rape, gang rape, Land grabbing, attacks on police, Love Jihad and so on…,” said Hindu Voice in an article detailing each of the 25 incidents.
The functionaries of the Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) are sharing the report of the Hindu Voice in their forums. The Assam chief minister has also become more vocal on his claims of “Muslims becoming majority community in several of the districts in Assam”.

Sarma invited the ire of the press bodies for targeting a journalist for his religious identity. In a presser, journalist Shah Alam sought the reply of the chief minister for the alleged flattening of hills.
The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance had won 11 Lok Sabha seats in the polls. The Congress had won three Assam Lok Sabha seats.
There was a dip of 4.74 per cent of the vote share for the AIUDF. The Badruddin Ajmal-headed AIUDF drew a blank in the Lok Sabha elections.
Both the BJP and the Congress had seen their vote share rising, 1.38 per cent and 2.08 per cent respectively. Assam-based observers claimed that the decimation of AIUDF was on account of delimitation.
