Congress levels serious corruption charges against Himanta Biswa Sarma; accuses Election Commission of colluding with BJP to “steal elections”

By TRH State Desk

GUWAHATI, July 16, 2025 — In a sharp political offensive, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of being directly involved in large-scale corruption, declaring that he will “soon be behind bars.”

Addressing a packed Congress workers’ convention in Guwahati, both leaders launched scathing attacks on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Election Commission, and the Modi government, charging them with undermining democracy and facilitating corporate cronyism.

Kharge: CM is Looting and Terrorising People”

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge accused Sarma of creating a climate of fear while enabling widespread corruption. “The Chief Minister is busy looting the people of Assam and instilling fear. Once Congress returns to power, the truth about the corruption will come out,” Kharge declared.

He questioned how Assam accumulated a debt of ₹2 lakh crore under BJP rule and slammed the government for demolishing homes in Dhubri. “Congress will rebuild those houses and support the victims. The land is being handed over to a few elite individuals while forests are being destroyed,” he said.

Kharge also raised concerns about the exploitation of tea garden workers, alleging they are being denied minimum wages. He reminded the audience of the Congress’s contribution to Assam’s industrial and social development, contrasting it with what he described as “Prime Minister Modi’s favouritism toward corporate giants like Adani and Ambani.”

Referencing the continuing violence in Manipur, Kharge questioned Modi’s silence and absence: “The Prime Minister roams foreign countries but hasn’t visited Manipur even once.”

Rahul: “Modi and Shah Won’t Be Able to Save Himanta”

Echoing the sentiment, Rahul Gandhi said the Chief Minister “knows his time is up,” and added, “Even Modi and Amit Shah won’t be able to save him from going to jail.” He alleged that Sarma was handing over Assam’s resources and land to Adani and Ambani while the people suffer due to corruption, inflation, and unemployment.

“The fear is visible on the Chief Minister’s face. The people of Assam will hold him accountable,” Rahul asserted.

He praised Assam Congress’s new leadership, particularly state party chief Gaurav Gogoi, and predicted that the Congress would deliver a strong performance in the next Assembly elections.

“Election Commission Acting as BJP Agent”

Rahul Gandhi also accused the Election Commission of acting on the BJP’s instructions. Citing the Maharashtra assembly elections, he claimed that a massive surge of one crore voters was added post Lok Sabha elections, and the EC refused to share the voter list or booth videography with the opposition.

“Now the same strategy is being deployed in Bihar. Names of poor voters, labourers, and Congress-RJD supporters are being deleted from the rolls,” he alleged. “Let this be a warning — they’ll try to do the same in Assam.”
