Shashi Tharoor asks Muhammed Yunus to stop attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi, August 12: Unabated violence against minority Hindus in Bangladesh and arson against legacy of Sheikh Mujib0ur-Rehman have riled the cross-sections of the Indian political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his congratulatory message to Muhammed Yunus, the chief advisor of Bangladesh, had also called for protection of the minority Hindus.

“Sad to see images like this of statues at the 1971 Shaheed Memorial Complex, Mujibnagar, destroyed by anti-India vandals. This follows disgraceful attacks on the Indian cultural centre, temples and Hindu homes in several places, even as reports came in of Muslim civilians protecting other minority homes and places of worship,” said the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) general secretary Dattatreya Hosbole has been repeatedly making statements on the unabated violence against the Hindus in Bangladesh. Hosbole has asked the Central government to take up the issue with Bangladesh.

The RSS affiliates are planning protests all across the country against the violence in Bangladesh against the Hindus and also attacks on the temples. Nari Shakti Foundation will be holding a protest march in the national capital on August 16 against the attacks on the Hindus in Bangladesh.

“The agenda of some of the agitators is quite clear. It is essential that Muhammed Yunus and his interim government take urgent steps to restore law and order in the interests of all Bangladeshis, of every faith. India stands with the people of Bangladesh at this turbulent time, but such anarchic excess can never be condoned,” added Tharoor in his condemnation of the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.

The Congress communication department chief, Jairam Ramesh, had earlier said: “The Congress hopes that the interim government of Bangladesh will take strong steps to instill confidence in minority communities and ensure that they continue to live their lives in an atmosphere of security, respect and harmony.”

A number of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs in the just concluded Budget session of parliament had raised the issue of the attacks on Hindus and temples in Bangladesh in the aftermath of the students’ protests ousting Sheikh Hasina, prime minister of Bangladesh, from the Islamic nation.

“Taking note that some influential voices within Bangladesh are demanding protection of that country’s multi-religious heritage, the Indian National Congress expresses its concern over reports of targeted attacks on minorities and their properties and places of worship there,” Ramesh posted on X, formerly Twitter.
