New Delhi, July 25: In his letters to leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge and leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah has blamed “some court orders” and other incidents for the Manipur violence.
Shah sought a bipartisan support for a discussion on the issue of Manipur violence. He also claimed in the letters that the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Manipur has ensured peace and development in the last six years in the state. “Manipur is witnessing an era of peace and development,” wrote Shah in the letters, which were released by him on his Twitter timeline.
“But because of some court orders and other incidents, violence took place in the first week of the May month. Some shameful incidents have also been reported after which the people in the country and particularly from Manipur are looking at Parliament to see the bipartisan support for the affected people,” wrote Shah in the letters.
He stressed that Parliament, rising above the party lines, should stand with the people in such difficult times. “While the Opposition is asking for a statement, the government is ready for full discussion on the Manipur issue,” added Shah. It may be recalled that the direction of the Manipur High Court to include the Meitei tribe in the scheduled tribes list had set off the violence on May 3 in the state.
Shah released the letters on the social media platforms after both the Houses of Parliament took up legislative businesses in the din. While the Opposition remained in the well of the two Houses, raising slogans, the Chair allowed discussion on the bills and their passages also. Earlier, the Opposition MPs had slammed the BJP bid to equate the Manipur violence with the law and order situation in other states such as Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. “Manipur is witnessing genocidal violence, which is not the case with Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh,” said Manoj Jha of the Rashtriya Janata Dal in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched a scathing attack on the Opposition to set the tone for a counter-offensive by the BJP. The Opposition remains firm on its demand that first Modi make a statement on Manipur violence and afterwards the discussion be taken up in both the Houses of Parliament.
A day before the commencement of the Monsoon session of Parliament, a viral video had surfaced of an incident in which two Kuki-Zomi women were paraded naked and afterwards gangraped. It has also been alleged that the police took no action to stop the ordeals of the two affected women.
