Ambushing Polity

The Asian Age in its Editorial has opined that the very idea of one nation and one election is against Article 1 of the Constitution that India shall be a Union of States, arguing that the move is a clandestine way of pushing presidential system without direct election while also skipping the accountability by way of fixing the tenure of the executive. Arguing that no law calls to stop development works for elections, the New Delhi-based daily also asserted that the government is looking at the “pliant panel to sign on the dotted line”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wont for scripting disruptions even if afterwards the whole machinery of the government is locked in the firefight battle to douse the flames of unintended outcomes as seen in the rollout of the GST, farm laws, demonetization, and others. This thrill may be on account of cult worship within the ruling BJP.

Forlorn Xi

The Tribune has in its Editorial delved into the issue of Chinese President Xi Jinping once more inviting missing barb over his skipping of the ASEAN and G20 Summits. The Chandigarh-based daily opined that Xi would have had his hands full of hob to douse fire over releasing the 2023 map, which riled four of the Asean nations and India. Also, Xi’s evasion from multilateral forum, said the daily, is at variance to Beijing’s bid to be the world power.

China being an opaque country leaves the outside world to do guess works, and there are occasional signs of growing dissensions against the leadership of Xi within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on the back of rising unemployment, piling up of debt on the book of Belt and Road Initiative (Italy exited), and overall economic contraction. Xi may have to firefight more on the home front.

Undermining NEP

The Telegraph has in its Editorial given an account of the Opposition-ruled states raising the voices against the National Education Policy. The Kolkata-based daily noted Kerala too joining Karnataka to walk out of NEP bandwagon. It also stated that West Bengal is also opposed to language issue enshrined in the NEP, while questioning aversion to scientific pursuit by darkening the findings of Darwin in the school books.

The overarching template of NEP is negative that it aims to scorch the influence of Macaulay from education. Ten years have almost gone by and the NEP still remains a contentious issue that should underline the missing links for Centre and States to come and discuss on common platforms.
