All-Party Meet Sparks Heated Exchange as Opposition Seeks Clarification on Terror Attack, Alleged India-Pakistan Conflict Claims

By MANISH ANAND

NEW DELHI, July 20, 2025 — The Opposition came out all guns blazing against the Narendra Modi-led government during an all-party meeting held at the Parliament complex on Sunday, demanding that the Prime Minister address several pressing issues in the upcoming Monsoon Session. The government, meanwhile, assured that all matters would be considered as per the rules governing both houses of Parliament.

Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, briefed the media on the deliberations at the meeting, which was chaired by Union Health Minister and Leader of the Rajya Sabha Jagat Prakash Nadda. “We have demanded that the Prime Minister make a statement on US President Donald Trump’s claim that five Indian fighter jets were downed during conflicts with Pakistan,” Gogoi said.

Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to travel to the United Kingdom from July 22 to 24, where he will oversee the signing of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement. As a result, he will be unavailable for at least the first three days of the Monsoon Session, which begins on Monday.

The Opposition also demanded a statement from the Prime Minister on the recent Pahalgam terror attack, in which terrorists killed 26 Hindu tourists. In a recent interview, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha admitted that there was an intelligence failure.

Further intensifying the pressure, the Opposition targeted the government over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh alleged large-scale election fraud, claiming that “forms have been submitted in the names of deceased individuals” and that the process is being misused to disenfranchise weaker sections of society ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Singh also echoed Gogoi’s demand for a statement from the Prime Minister on Trump’s assertions, which include not only the alleged downing of Indian jets but also a ceasefire arrangement tied to a trade deal between India and Pakistan. CPI(M) MP John Brittas joined in the chorus, insisting that the Prime Minister must clarify India’s position on Trump’s repeated claims.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to the Opposition’s demands by stating that the government is open to discussing all issues within the rules of parliamentary procedure. However, no formal statement has yet been issued by the government on Trump’s claims.

Notably, Prime Minister Modi had earlier rebutted Trump’s assertions during a phone conversation while attending the G7 Outreach Summit in Canada. Despite this, Trump has repeated his claims on multiple occasions, claiming that he forced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan by leveraging trade negotiations.

As the Monsoon Session opens, the stage is set for heated debates, with the Opposition determined to corner the government on issues of national security, electoral integrity, and diplomatic credibility.
