In a recent discussion on 60 Minutes, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed a deeply uncomfortable truth about modern AI systems: they are teaching themselves skills they were never trained to possess. Even more troubling, scientists cannot fully explain how or why this happens.

One striking example involved a Google AI system that unexpectedly adapted when prompted in Bengali—a language it was not trained to understand. With only minimal prompting, researchers discovered the system could suddenly translate Bengali fluently. This unexpected leap forced a rethink. What began as a single anomaly has now expanded into a research push toward enabling AI to handle up to 1,000 languages.

This phenomenon is known within the field as the “black box” problem.

As explained in the 60 Minutes discussion, AI researchers often cannot say with certainty why a system gives a particular answer—or why it fails. There are theories and improving tools to interpret these models, but the reality remains stark: the most advanced AI systems operate in ways that are only partially understood, even by their creators.

That raises a dangerous paradox. Society is rapidly deploying AI across healthcare, finance, warfare, governance, and public discourse—despite admitting that we do not fully understand how these systems reason.

As one expert put it on 60 Minutes: “You don’t fully understand how it works, and yet you’ve turned it loose on society.”

Supporters of AI counter with a familiar analogy. Humans, too, do not fully understand how the human mind works—and yet society functions. That comparison, while comforting on the surface, may be misleading. Humans are shaped by biology, ethics, accountability, and lived consequences. Machines are not.

The difference is scale and speed. When AI systems self-learn, they do so instantly, globally, and without moral intuition. Emergent behaviour that surprises researchers today could reshape economies or destabilize societies tomorrow.

The AI black box is no longer a theoretical concern. It is an active condition of the modern world.
