New Delhi, December 28: Afghanistan-Pakistan war appears looming after the Taliban forces launched punitive strikes against Pakistani military posts on Saturday. Reports stated that scores of Pakistani military personnel had been killed in the Taliban strikes.
Afghanistan had vowed revenge against the Pakistani Air Force strikes in the border areas which had reportedly left several Afghans killed. Pakistan had claimed that the air strikes were aimed at terrorists.
Reports said that the Khost district administration of Afghanistan ordered drone attacks against the Pakistani military targets along the border between the two nations. Afghanistan claims that the strikes were carried out in its own region since the border is disputed.
The Dabagai area along the Durand Line came under the drone-mounted strikes by the Taliban. Drone attacks were also aimed at the Ozgarhi area, said reports. They also stated that regions of Khushkram, Toop, Enzarki, Tabi, and Kaftan were also targeted in the drone attacks.
Local media reports said that significant casualties have been inflicted upon the Pakistani army. They also claimed that the Afghanistan military seized some of the army posts of Pakistan in the region as they abandoned their posts amid fierce strikes.
Afghanistan pressed in action light and heavy mortars against the Pakistani positions alongside the Durand line early on Saturday. Media reports said that multiple explosions had been seen by the locals.
The Afghanistan Ministry of Defence in a statement said: “Several points beyond the hypothetical (Durand) line, serving as centres and hideouts for malicious elements and their supporters who organised and coordinated attacks in Afghanistan, were targeted.” The Ministry said that the attacks were launched in response to the Pakistani air strikes in the Waziristan region of Afghanistan.
Afghanistan Ministry of Defence spokesperson Enayatullah Khowarazmi said: “We do not consider the region to be the territory of Pakistan”. He, yet, said that the targets of the attacks were on the other side of the disputed border line.
Al-Mersad, a news agency, in a report said that “intense clashes along the Durand Line in Paktia and Khost provinces” have been reported, which resulted in “significant casualties among Pakistani militia forces”. Unverified reports claimed that over 50 Pakistan soldiers have been killed in the punitive military actions of Afghanistan.
Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi had slammed Pakistan for the airstrikes on “Waziristan refugees in Barmal District, Paktika”.
