New Delhi, November 1: Adani Power has cut electricity supply by half to Bangladesh, according to Daily Star. The Dhaka-based daily said that Adani reduced the power supply after the October 30 deadline for payment of dues lapsed.
“India’s Adani Power Jharkhand Limited (APJL) has stopped half of its power supply to Bangladesh,” said Daily Star in a report on Friday. The daily stated that Adani Power cut the power supply after Bangladesh failed to pay for the outstanding bills.
“Data from Power Grid Bangladesh PLC showed the Adani plant reduced supply on Thursday night,” added Daily Star. It claimed that Adani Power Jharkhand Limited reduced the electricity generation capacity by half.

“The 1,496-megawatt-plant is now producing around 700MW from a single unit,” reported Daily Star. The daily claimed the reduction in electricity supply has impacted availability of power in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh reported a shortfall of more than 1,600 MW of electricity last night, said Daily Star. The development has come after Adani Power had given October 30 deadline for the payment of outstanding dues.
“Adani wrote to the power secretary asking the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB) to pay the bills by October 30,” reported the Dhaka-based daily. Bangladesh also imports electricity from Nepal by using the Indian transmission infrastructure.
The new dispensation in Bangladesh is regularly speaking against India. Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh Mohammad Yunus has been asking India to silence the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Reports from the US recently stated that the violent campaign to oust Hasina was staged with training and planning. Yunus also told the Clinton Centre last month that the violent agitation to oust Hasina was “meticulously planned”.

Bangladesh is getting assurances of financial support in the western capitals. Reports said that Bangladesh may soon get financial bailout package. Yet, Bangladesh ignored the demand of Adani Power for payment of the outstanding dues. Bangladesh owes over $800 million to Adani Power in dues.
While Yunus-led dispensation in Bangladesh is regularly making anti-India statements, New Delhi hopes that better senses will soon prevail in Dhaka. Union Minister for External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in a recent conversation at a Pune University said that “governance has its own challenges”.
Jaishankar hoped that the pulls of economy will prevail over the worldviews of the new regime in Bangladesh. The Northeast parts of India surround Bangladesh from three sides while one side open into sea.
