Kannada Actress Confession Leak Details Ranya Rao’s ‘Golden’ Travels

New Delhi, March 7: Kannada Actress Ranya Rao has confessed to smuggling gold. Her leaked confessions to the revenue officials detailed her frequent travels to smuggle gold, said reports.

Ranya Rao travelled 27 times to Dubai last year, said reports. The revenue officials put her on surveillance for her “abnormally” high travels to Dubai, said reports.

The Kannada actress has also confessed to travelling to Middle East and Europe frequently, said NDTV in a report. “Rao said that her father is KS Hegdesh, a real estate businessman. Her husband is Jatin Hukkeri, an architect. She lives with her husband in Bengaluru,” said the statement quoted by the media reports.

Ranya Rao is known for films like ‘Maanikya’. She also acted in the film ‘Pataki’. She was married to Jatin Hukkeri four months ago per reports.

The actress is a stepdaughter of a director general of police (DGP). The police official told media that “she has let us down. If there is any violation, the law will take its course.” He also stated that the arrest of the actress is a “huge shock to the family”.

Ranya Rao told the officials probing her that she travelled to “Europe, America, and (the) Middle East”. She also admitted travelling to “Dubai and Saudi Arabia”. “I wish to state that I am tired at present as I did not get enough rest,” the media reports quoted from her statement.

The revenue officials caught Ranya Rao with 14 kg gold on her arrival from a flight from Dubai. The value of the gold bars was estimated at ₹14.56 crores.

The 33-year-old actress is a high profile accused in the gold smuggling case. Gold smuggling is an age-old crime in India. Several films have been made in the past on the involvement of gold smuggling in the past.

In the last financial year, the official seized whopping 4869 kg of gold.

“The Middle East has been top destinations for gold smuggling for several decades. But Myanmar has emerged as the new route for smuggling gold,” said a senior official from the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

The official said that gold smugglers are using innovative ways to smuggle the precious yellow metal. Gold smuggling continues unabated due to the government imposing duty of six per cent. The earlier important duty was 15 per cent.
