New Delhi, January 5: In a major boost to her political career, the Aam Aadmi Party has nominated Swati Maliwal for the Rajya Sabha nomination from Delhi. Along with Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta, Maliwal will be fielded by the AAP for the biennial elections for the Rajya Sabha.

Maliwal who is 39 years old has been serving as the chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women since 2015. Since then Maliwal has been holding the post in the DCW with the Delhi government extending her term. As the chairperson of the DCW, Maliwal made a name for herself for taking on the Delhi Police over the law and order situation, as well as cases of crimes against women.

Maliwal is known as an aggressive political activist in the ranks of the AAP. She has been associated with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal since the days of his NGO works in Gaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. By nominating Maliwal for the Rajya Sabha membership, the AAP has sent out a loud message to the people in the national capital that the party is promoting genuine leadership from the ranks who have been loyal to the organization.

Along with Atishi who is a minister in the Kejriwal government, Maliwal is a widely known face of the AAP. She has also been a member of the core group of the AAP. Maliwal has also taken on the taxi drivers who allegedly harass women passengers.

By promoting Maliwal, the AAP is making a tactical move to make the party voice heard in the Rajya Sabha. The AAP MP Sanjay Singh was seen as the most vocal face from the Opposition benches. He was suspended from the Rajya Sabha on several occasions. Afterwards, the Enforcement Directorate arrested Sanjay Singh in the alleged money laundering case.

With Raghav Chadha, Maliwal may become the face of the AAP in the Rajya Sabha. With the AAP clearly nursing the image of the Aam Aadmi, Maliwal is seen as a shrewd choice of the party. She is educated and a debater. Also, she is young as is the case with Chadha. Maliwal had briefly worked with HCL.

With the ED issuing summons to Kejriwal, the AAP by promoting Maliwal has also sent out a clear message that the party has a number of functionaries in its ranks to take up the leadership roles in future.
