UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned from Keir Starmer’s cabinet, saying he has no confidence in the Prime Minister’s leadership.

London, May 14, 2026 — Britain’s political crisis deepened dramatically on Thursday after Wes Streeting resigned from the government, declaring he had “lost confidence” in the leadership of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

In a sharply worded resignation letter released publicly, Streeting said it would be “dishonourable and unprincipled” for him to remain in office after concluding that Starmer could no longer lead the Labour Party effectively into the future.

The resignation comes amid a full-scale rebellion within Labour following catastrophic local election results last week, where the party reportedly lost more than 1,400 council seats to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

Streeting, who served as Health and Social Care Secretary, used the two-page letter both to defend his record in government and to launch a devastating critique of Starmer’s political direction.

“Where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift,” Streeting wrote, accusing the Prime Minister of failing to inspire the party or the country at a time of mounting political and economic uncertainty.

He also warned that Labour was losing touch with its traditional support base because of policy confusion and controversial messaging. Referring to recent political controversies, Streeting said voters no longer understood “who we are or what we really stand for.”

Despite the criticism, Streeting praised Starmer’s international leadership and credited him with leading Labour to its 2024 election victory. He specifically referenced Starmer’s efforts to keep Britain out of the escalating Iran conflict.

However, the most politically explosive line in the letter came when Streeting declared: “It is now clear that you will not lead the Labour Party into the next general election.”

The statement is likely to intensify speculation about an imminent Labour leadership contest.

Streeting also called for a broad debate about Labour’s future rather than “petty factionalism,” signalling that ideological divisions inside the party are widening rapidly.

The resignation is especially significant because Streeting has increasingly been viewed by Labour MPs and political observers as the leading contender to replace Starmer. His departure could trigger further resignations from ministers and backbench MPs already uneasy over Labour’s electoral collapse and the rapid rise of Reform UK.

Analysts say the coming days could determine whether Starmer survives politically or becomes the shortest-serving Labour Prime Minister in modern British history.
