Inside Varanasi’s Rs 400-Crore Shiv-Themed International Cricket Stadium Set to Transform Cricket in Purvanchal

Varanasi, July 4, 2026 — Uttar Pradesh’s ambitious international cricket stadium in Varanasi has reached 92% completion and is on track to be ready by September, with the Yogi Adityanath government describing it as a landmark project that will strengthen sports infrastructure and position eastern Uttar Pradesh as a major cricketing hub.

Being built at an estimated cost of ₹400 crore, the stadium will have a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators and is designed with a distinctive Lord Shiva-inspired architectural theme, making it one of the country’s most unique sporting venues.

According to the Uttar Pradesh government, the project reflects Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s focus on expanding world-class sports infrastructure while creating new opportunities for athletes and promoting sports tourism in the region.

Shiva-Themed Design to Set Stadium Apart

The stadium’s architecture draws heavily from Varanasi’s spiritual heritage. The media centre and North Pavilion are being designed in the shape of Lord Shiva’s damru (drum), while the floodlight towers will resemble tridents (trishuls). The main entrance is inspired by bel leaves, traditionally associated with Lord Shiva, and the roof has been designed in the shape of a crescent moon.

The state government said the design blends Kashi’s cultural identity with modern sporting infrastructure, giving the venue a distinctive global identity.

The stadium is being developed with facilities that meet international cricketing standards. Apart from the main international cricket ground, the complex will feature a full-sized practice ground, modern dressing rooms, advanced media and broadcasting facilities, contemporary pavilions, high-capacity floodlights, sophisticated security systems, upgraded electrical and fire safety infrastructure, and parking for around 1,500 vehicles.

The venue is expected to host both domestic and international cricket matches while also serving as a high-performance training centre for aspiring cricketers.

₹400-Crore Project Funded by UPCA

The Uttar Pradesh government said the project is being financed through the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association’s (UPCA) own accumulated resources, reflecting the association’s financial strength and commitment to promoting cricket across the state.

Officials described the project as an example of how sporting bodies can create world-class infrastructure through long-term planning and efficient use of resources.

The state government credited its speedy administrative decisions for the rapid progress of the project. It said the government provided land on a 90-year lease, facilitated all necessary approvals in a time-bound manner, and ensured uninterrupted coordination between the state administration and local authorities.

A dedicated electricity substation was also established near the stadium through the Chief Minister’s development fund, with power connectivity completed within four months to support both construction and future operations.

Boost for Purvanchal Cricket and Sports Tourism

The government believes the stadium will emerge as the focal point of cricket development across Purvanchal, giving young players access to world-class training and competition without having to leave the region.

Officials also expect the venue to enhance Varanasi’s profile as a destination for national and international sporting events, creating opportunities for sports tourism while benefiting hotels, transport operators, local businesses and the regional economy.

UPCA Chief Executive Officer Ankit Chatterjee said construction has reached 92% completion, describing the project as an example of successful coordination among the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association, the state government and the Varanasi administration.

He said the stadium is expected to become a lasting sporting legacy that will contribute to cricket development and youth empowerment in Uttar Pradesh for decades to come.
