Kolkata, May 8, 2026 — Suvendu Adhikari on Friday struck an emotional and combative tone after being elected leader of the BJP legislative party in West Bengal, declaring that the party’s mission is to build a “fear-free” Bengal under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Addressing party workers and legislators after his election, Adhikari said the BJP must now focus on fulfilling the expectations of the people and transforming West Bengal according to Modi’s vision of governance and development.
“Our only mantra should be Narendra Modi’s mantra — effort, trust, and commitment,” Adhikari said, adding that the BJP had succeeded in overcoming what he described as a climate of fear in the state.
The BJP leader credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the national leadership for strengthening the party organisation in Bengal and instilling confidence among party workers.
Quoting lines inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s famous vision of a fearless society, Adhikari said Bengal must move towards a future “where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.”
He claimed that the BJP’s growing support base in the state reflects rising public trust and said the party must now work to expand its voter base beyond the 46% support it received in the elections.
Adhikari also sharpened the BJP’s ideological messaging by calling for an “infiltration-free Bengal,” stronger protection for women, and reinforcement of national identity and cultural values. Referring to Kolkata as India’s “cultural capital,” he said Bengal must reclaim its historical and civilisational prominence.
The BJP leader stressed collective leadership, saying the focus should not be on individuals but on teamwork and organisation-building. “Not I, but we,” he declared at the conclusion of his speech.
Adhikari’s elevation comes at a crucial moment for the BJP in West Bengal as the party seeks to consolidate its organisational gains and position itself as the principal challenger to the ruling All India Trinamool Congress ahead of future electoral battles.
