Former US President Barack Obama hailed widespread protests in Minneapolis against ICE agents

New Delhi, February 15, 2026 — Former US President Barack Obama has said that he sees hopes in “activated” citizens to reclaim decency in America. Obama hailed the people who took to the street in Minneapolis against ICE raids.

Speaking to podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama said: “That kind of heroic and sustained behaviour in sub-zero weather by ordinary people is what should give us hope.” He also stressed that the people’s resolve despite odds “should remind us that at the end of the day” that the “democracy is working.”

His remarks came in the wake of the killings of the US citizens in Minneapolis during confrontation with the federal ICE agents. The killing of poet Renee Good sparked widespread protests in Minneapolis. Good was a poet who was allegedly shot dead by an ICE agent while she was seated in her car during a raid by the federal agents.

“The way we get a democracy that’s working, the way we get policies that actually are helping working families. You know, get ahead. The way that we restore norms, rule of law, decency… it’s going to be… because we citizens are activated,” noted Obama in his conversation with the podcaster.

He stressed that the people are “paying attention and saying enough.” “The people now are saying we have a different idea of what the American family should look like and community should look like and, and that is what I’m seeing across,” added Obama.

The Trump administration has framed the people’s pushback against the federal ICE agents as a reaction of “Left-liberals.” But the critics slam the Trump administration that the American citizens have been killed as the ICE agents use excessive forces against the people during their raids.
