New Delhi, June 15, 2026 — The Noida International Airport (NIA) welcomed its first passengers today, marking a new air travel gateway for the National Capital Region and western Uttar Pradesh.
IndiGo made history as the first airline to operate from the airport, with an inaugural flight arriving from Lucknow in the morning and the first departure heading to Bengaluru shortly after.
The airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 March 2026. Since then, teams have run extensive preparedness trials to ensure all systems, staff, and processes were ready before opening day.
What to expect as a passenger
The terminal is designed to feel welcoming and easy to navigate. Travellers can use DigiYatra for a fully paperless journey, self-service check-in and bag-drop counters, and a range of food and shopping options featuring both international names and local flavours.
The architecture draws inspiration from Uttar Pradesh’s cultural heritage — stairways at the terminal entrance echo the famous ghats of Varanasi, while ornamental lattice screens evoke the look of a traditional haveli. High ceilings, an open courtyard after security, and generous natural light give the terminal a calm, unhurried atmosphere.
Passengers can reach the airport via taxis, app-based cab services, and dedicated bus routes connecting Delhi NCR and major cities across North India.
Cargo and logistics
The airport also has a dedicated air cargo facility run by Air India SATS (AISATS). It starts with a handling capacity of 200,000 metric tonnes per year, with plans to scale up to 1.5 million tonnes. The facility uses digital tools for paperless documentation and real-time shipment tracking, and its warehousing zone is designed to serve e-commerce companies and freight operators.
The bigger picture
For now, NIA operates domestic routes only; international flights are expected to begin in the coming months. Phase 1 of the airport is built to handle 12 million passengers a year, with the long-term masterplan envisioning capacity of over 70 million annually over its 40-year concession period.
The airport is operated by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a fully-owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, in partnership with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Government of India.
