Apex court flags “ad-hocism” in India’s examination system as NTA faces scrutiny over NEET paper leak controversy and CBSE battles backlash over On Screen Marking System.
New Delhi, May 29, 2026 — The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre to fix accountability in the NEET exam row. The Solicitor General Tushar Mehta replied, saying that “PM is personally monitoring the issue.”
The apex court has fixed a fresh date for hearing a slew of petitions on the NEET examination row. The SG in place of giving any concrete roadmap to revamp the examination system invoked the credentials of the PM in the issue.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) is in the midst of the NEET exam row. The paper leak and the subsequent NEET UG exam cancellation has brought spotlight on the NTA. Petitioners are demanding that the NTA be structured. Some even demanded that the exams be held under a judicial watch.
The government has sought to calm down anger of the people by claiming that the Indian Air Force is being roped in to address the logistical issues in transferring the question papers. Experts are offering their suggestions over the internet on ways the NEET exams can be revamped with some advocating computer-based testing.
“It is very traumatic if this is happening. We cannot disappoint our students. It is not merely the student, it’s the family too… It is so much of emotions, love, time, years of study. It is not beyond us,” Bar and Bench reported the observation of the apex court.
The Supreme Court bench of P S Narsimha and Alok Aradhe probed the government counsel of fixing the accountability. Mehta concurred, saying that “buck must stop somewhere.” But the apex court in its observation made displeasure known, saying that the “problems with most of the Indian institutions are ad-hocism.”
In addition to the NEET controversy, the Modi government is in the eye of storm over the CBSE 12th Board On Screen Marking System (OMS), which has rocked the public faith in the examination system. The CBSE on Friday said the it will start the process of revaluation of the answer sheets from June 1.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reiterated allegations that the OMS contract was awarded to a Hyderabad-based company “by diluting the technical parameters.” He stressed that the poor technical competence of the firm has reflected in complaints of students about blurred answer sheets and poor scanned copies.
