Kurt Andersen’s ‘The Breakup’ Arrives This August: Inside the Fantasyland Author’s First Novel in Over a Decade
New Delhi, July 30, 2026 — Kurt Andersen, the bestselling author behind Fantasyland and Evil Geniuses, is set to return to fiction this August with The Breakup — his first novel since 2013’s True Believers.
The Breakup is due for publication on August 18, 2026, by Random House, running 576 pages. The book is already available for pre-order in hardcover, e-book and audio formats, with the audiobook edition running roughly 17 hours in length.
The novel is set in 2045 America, in a country reshaped by an AI-drenched, post-civil-war landscape that is completing its split into two or more separate nations. At its center is a marriage under strain. Natalie and Asher’s 23-year relationship has long carried fault lines over how they view their fellow Americans and navigate an AI-saturated modern life.
After twenty-three years together, and after surviving two years of civil war, the couple find themselves living apart — Natalie in rural Tennessee, now part of the newly formed Free American Republic, and Asher in a smaller United States, based in San Francisco. Their relationship becomes a mirror for the country’s own unravelling — confused, messy, painful, ambivalent and, at the same time, deeply intimate.
The story shifts when Natalie and Asher are pulled back into each other’s orbit while touring colleges with their seventeen-year-old, sending them on a road trip through a transformed and uncertain American landscape reshaped by both an uprising and rapid technological change. Along the way, they confront the question the nation itself has wrestled with for a generation — which differences are irreconcilable, and when is something broken still worth saving.

Early reviews from the US trade press have flagged the novel’s tonal range and political bite. Kirkus Reviews described it as a story where a road trip meets corporate intrigue meets political violence in an ultra-polarized near-future America.
Kurt Andersen is the New York Times bestselling author of nine books, and co-founded Spy magazine and hosted the Peabody Award-winning public radio program Studio 360. His prior novels, including Turn of the Century and Heyday, have similarly used fiction to probe contemporary American life, while Fantasyland and Evil Geniuses established him as a chronicler of the country’s ideological fault lines in nonfiction form.
