New Delhi, August 20, 2026 — The Drug Enforcement Administration has entered the investigation into Hayden Panettiere’s death, joining local authorities in South Carolina in a case that officials have so far declined to characterize publicly beyond calling the cause and manner of death “pending.”
TMZ, which first reported the development, said the DEA has agents assisting the parallel death investigations already underway, according to sources with direct knowledge of the probe. ABC News confirmed the same, reporting that the DEA’s involvement comes one day after Greenville police released a report detailing the scene at the residence where Panettiere was pronounced dead.
The DEA will be assisting the parallel investigations currently underway by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office and the Greenville Police Department. Preliminary autopsy results, per media reports, found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.
The coroner’s office has been notably careful with its language throughout. As ABC News reported, officials said Panettiere’s official cause and manner of death “remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies.”
The DEA doesn’t route agents into every celebrity death — its involvement typically signals investigators suspect illegal drug distribution, not just personal drug use, may be connected to the case. TMZ reported that paramedics were heard on a 911 call referencing a possible “overdose,” and that Narcan, the over-the-counter overdose reversal treatment, was found inside the apartment where Panettiere died. Fox News, citing a police report, added that Panettiere’s boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, showed officers a bag of medication she had reportedly been taking.
None of that confirms an overdose caused her death — the coroner’s office has been explicit that toxicology results are still pending, and officials have said there were no obvious signs of trauma. But taken together with the DEA’s entry into the case, it points to investigators treating the possibility of drug involvement as a serious line of inquiry rather than a footnote.
A Familiar Playbook
The Hollywood Reporter drew a direct parallel to a recent precedent: the DEA’s involvement in the investigation into Friends star Matthew Perry’s 2023 death, which the outlet noted followed high levels of ketamine being found in his system and ultimately led to five arrests and convictions, including two doctors and a supplier dubbed the “Ketamine Queen.” That case became a template for how federal and local agencies coordinate when a celebrity death raises questions about illicit drug supply chains, and its shadow is clearly present in how this story is being covered.
For now, the DEA has offered no comment beyond a boilerplate line reported by TMZ, which quoted a spokesperson saying the agency “does not confirm or comment on active investigations.”
Toxicology results, which typically take weeks, will likely be the next major development in the case. Until then, the involvement of a federal agency best known for pursuing drug trafficking — rather than simply confirming cause of death — is itself the most significant signal investigators have sent publicly so far.
